Being The Adult

Description

Spoiler warning for those who haven’t seen the film yet.

Kubo's biggest obstacle was overcoming his family and the circumstances their decisions placed before him at birth (and all without depth perception I might add). Childhood should be one of the most wonderful stages of life but quite often it isn’t. Even more unfortunate for some, it’s completely nonexistent. Sometimes we are born into situations that don’t just require us grow up quickly but they may also require us to look after those around us in ways that a child normally wouldn’t or shouldn’t have to.

There are two moments that stand out the most for me. The first, taking care of his mother as she was in a catatonic state for a majority of the day while performing in the nearby village for their food. I know this isn't as exciting as a level boss fight but seeing Kubo feeding his mother struck me deeply. Also, it definitely says a lot more about his character, and the unfortunate reversal of parental roles. The second was the moment he forgave his grandfather even though he took one of his eyes and was pretty much the source for all his troubles. I know much older people that are incapable of forgiving for a lot less.

So I named this piece “Being the Adult”. This is something we say to ourselves when we intentionally take a loss for the greater good while everyone else insists on being childish/selfish. Be it justified or unjust, every one of Kubo's family members acted towards their own personal self interest. This eventually led to Kubo's conception and plight. As a result, this caused him to sacrifice his childhood to pick up the pieces. He could have easily been crushed by the weight of the challenges life had stacked against him. At such an early age, it would be totally understandable. He could have perpetuated the selfish cycle by growing distant from his mother, totally righting off his father and grandfather. Cursing them all for the life they dragged him into. Instead, he chose to be the adult. Fighting through it all with love, understanding, and forgiveness.

We all can relate one one level or another because none of us get to pick the families we're born into or the condition they are in. We can either walk away or be willing to play with the cards we are dealt. Loving and accepting them for who they are, flaws and all. Learning from their missteps and shortcomings, making sure that you and the following generations won't have to suffer from the same mistakes.

About the piece:
The more I thought about those two moments I began to notice a sort of "ying yang" effect between the two. Kubo caring  for his mother in the warm colors of the morning's sunrise. Then you have the conclusion where logic takes the place of warmer emotions as Kubo forgives his grandfather beneath the cooler colors of the moon. Both holding a common thread, Kubo's compassion. I also noticed that his mother and grandfather both had scars over their eyes. The mother's left, like Kubo and the grandfather's right. I haven't quite figured out what it means but it aided me (along with the other dualities) in the decision to take a symmetrical approach. I threw in a little frame work for focus, a grain filter to bring it all together and that's pretty much it.

Tools used:
Clippaint Studio on an old Asus ep121 tablet.

Time :
Not sure but I've been working on it (on and off) for about a week.

Thanks for the opportunity! My daughter and I are big Laika film fans. She's 6 and loves Coraline the most but Kubo is gaining on it.

Good luck to everyone!

Actually, Kubo gave the grandfather that scar with the sword unbreakable and the grandfather indirectly gave  his mother the scar by raising a huge wave that crashed into her and had her bang her head on the ocean floor
